Hymn 240

Depth of mercy! Can there be

Meter: 7.7.7.7.D.

Scripture: Lamentations 3:22

1

Depth of mercy! Can there be

Mercy still reserved for me?

Can my God His wrath forbear?

Me, the chief of sinners, spare?

2

I have long withstood His grace,

Long provoked Him to His face,

Would not hearken to His calls,

Griev’d Him by a thousand falls.

3

Whence to me this waste of love?

Ask my Advocate above:

See the cause in Jesus’ face,

Now before the throne of grace.

4

There for me my Saviour stands,

Shows His wounds and spreads His hands.

God is love, I know, I feel;

Jesus weeps and loves me still.

5

Jesus answer from above,

Full of boundless love Thou art;

I fall down beneath Thy feet,

Wilt Thou not forgive my sins.

6

Bring my heart to repentance,

That I may weep for my sins,

Have contrition for my sins,

Believe and ne’er sin again.
